Information regarding stomach surgeries

You might know that there is one major health problem that people are faced with all over the world: obesity. There are a lot of people fighting with this problem and there are also a lot of people who are overweight.

Most of them try to use diets and exercise, but at some point they see no way out but to get a surgery. You might think that this is an easy way out, but you should know that there is a lot more to it than that. Such a surgery is sure to change your life forever and there are a lot of rules that you will have to obey.

The stomach surgeries are also known as weight loss surgeries because they help the patients lose weight by changing the way the body digests and absorbs the food. You might know that the food you intake is broken down to small pieces and they are absorbed giving you energy. The stomach surgeries involve changing the stomach and/or the small intestine to change the amount of food that is digested.

The stomach surgery to control obesity has been developed as a result of operations for cancer or severe ulcers because they involved removing a large part of the stomach or the small intestine. The patients who had such a surgery lost a lot of weight after the procedure and so some surgeons started to use these methods to treat people with severe obesity. The first type of surgery ever used for this purpose was the intestinal bypass. This kind of operation was used for the first time 40 years ago and it caused weight loss because of malabsorbtion.

The main idea of this procedure is that the patients would be able to eat a lot of food, but this would be poorly digested or it would pass the digestive track way to fast so the body wouldn’t be able to absorb the calories. The downside of the procedure was that a lot of nutritive elements were lost and it led to malnutrition. The side effects that it had were unpredictable and sometimes even fatal. This is why the original kind of surgery is not used anymore.

There are some other methods that surgeons use in our days that lead to weight loss because they limit the amount of food that the stomach can hold. There are two major types of procedures for weight loss. The first one is the restrictive surgery during which the surgeon reduces the size of the stomach. Apart of the stomach is removed or closed so the amount of food that you can eat is limited. The other type of surgery is the gastric bypass and in this case you should know that a part of the digestion and absorption takes place in the small intestine and so this surgery shortens the length of the small intestine and/or changes where it connects to the stomach. This way it limits the amount of food that can be fully digested and absorbed.

Ok, that video is really disgusting and should not be on a website as cool as this one. Anyway, I thought that if you want to become thinner, they use this sort of vacuum to suck out the extra body fat and no actual surgery is necessary. And is it safe to have surgery and have your stomach reduced? I never heard of such a surgery before and it sounds really suspicious. I doubt it that any doctor would recommend such a surgery even in severe cases of obesity.
