What to know about medical feeding tube in stomach surgery?

In case you are having some trouble with your stomach then you might want to know more information about medical feeding tube in stomach surgery .

It might be possible that you won’t experience this but it is also likely that in case you have a health issue the doctors will have to feed you through the tube because they will have no other alternative. I think no matter what procedure you will have to go through, it is best to gather some information before the procedure to be prepared for the things that the procedure involves.

You should know that inserting a gastroctomy feeding tube means that the surgeon places a tube through the skin of the patient and through the wall of the stomach, directly into the stomach. The procedures itself is known to be having several different names including gastrostomy tube insertion, stomach tube insetion and percutaneous endoscopic tube insertion.

The procedure itself is often performed through the mouth and so no real surgery is needed. This type of procedure is called endoscopy and in order to make the procedure easier for the patient the doctors use local numbing medication and intravenous sleep medicines so that the patient won’t feel any pain while the procedure is performed.

Another method to get the procedure done is through surgery. While the patient is deeply sleeping and is under general anesthesia a small incision is made on the left side of the stomach. Then the surgeon inserts into the stomach a small, hollow, flexible tube that has a balloon or a special tip. Once this is done the surgeon closes the stomach with stitches around the tube and then he or she closes the incision.

The tube can be used as a temporarely solution or as a permanent one. There might be many reasons for which the doctor suggests this method and these reasons include cases when babies are born with different abnormalities, and adult patients who have different problems with the function of certain organs or body parts.

You should know that the anesthesia has some risks as well that include allergic reaction to the medication and problems with breathing. The surgery itself (just as any other kind of surgery) isn’t risk free either: the surgery might cause bleeding and infection. Still you should know that the surgery itself is a simple one and most probably there won’t be any complications.

After the surgery it will take about5-7 days for the stomach and the abdomen to heal and the pain that you might be experiencing can be treated with several types of pain killers. Normal feeding will start will light fluids and increase slowly. There are some things that the patient and the family of the patient will be thought by the doctor like caring for the skin around the tube, signs and symptoms of infection, and what to do in case the tube is pulled out.

Now you know a lot more about medical feeding tube in stomach surgery and you will be prepared.
